چکیده

An occurring problem of the image-based-rendering technology for Virtual Environments has been that subjects in general showed very little movement of head and body. Our hypothesis is that the movement rate could be enhanced by introducing the auditory modality. In the study described in this paper, 126 subjects participated in a between-subjects experiment involving six different experimental conditions, including both uniand bi-modal stimuli (auditory and visual). The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of auditory rendering in stimulating and enhancing subjects’ motion in virtual reality. The auditory stimuli consisted of several combinations of auditory feedback, including static sound sources as well as self-induced sounds. Results show that motion in virtual reality is significantly enhanced when moving sound sources and sound of egomotion are rendered in the environment.

An automated time and hand motion analysis based on planar motion capture extended to a virtual environment

In the context of industrial engineering, the predetermined time systems (PTS) play an important role in workplaces because inefficiencies are found in assembly processes that require manual manipulations. In this study, an approach is proposed with the aim to analyze time and motions in a manual process using a capture motion system embedded to a virtual environment. Capture motion system trac...

Using the perceptually oriented approach to optimize spatial presence & ego-motion simulation

This chapter is concerned with the perception and simulation of ego-motion in virtual environments, and how spatial presence and other higher cognitive and top-down factors can contribute to improve the illusion of egomotion in virtual reality (VR). In the real world, we are used to being able to move around freely and interact with our environment in a natural and effortless manner. Current VR...

Improving results of urban design research by enhancing advanced semiexperiments in virtual environments

There is abundant literature regarding virtual reality as a technology of interest in the present age. However, there are few comprehensive studies on strategies that can improve the level of urban design research using this technique. To investigate the issue, this paper first reviews the concept of virtual reality. Next, the opinions of experts in the field of virtual reality technology are s...
